The incomparable luxury of a silken wrap is brought to journal form with our French Ornate Collection. With designs discovered in an antique swatchbook filled with fabrics collected in the 1800s, this series champions the complex designs that came out of the golden age of silk production in Lyon, France, in the 19th century.
Exactingly printed to recreate the luminosity and look of classic era silk, this book cover is dedicated to the beautiful fabrics of the Jacquard loom silk weaving tradition of France. The deep blue of this cover has been selected to closely match, and enhance, the hue of one of the original fabric swatches.
Silk is one of the oldest fabrics known to humankind, its discovery as a weavable fibre dating back as early as the mid-3rd century BC in China. Europe was first exposed to the exceptional delicacy of silk – soft, sensuous and shimmering in its opulence – via the “Silk Road,” a trading route between the Continent and the Far East.
The influx of this gorgeous fabric into the market created an insatiable demand and in 1466 Louis XI chose Lyon as the site for the French silk industry, an enterprise that flourished for over three centuries. Revolutionized when the invention of the silk loom in 1804 made the weaving of more complex designs possible, the tradition of silk manufacturing continues to be a major draw for this region.
